MOBILE SATELLITE TELEPHONES AND VIDEOPHONES REVOLUTIONIZING ON-THE-SCENE NEWS COVERAGE AND COMMUNICATIONS WORLDWIDE
McLean, VA, October 24, 2001 From live interviews with rescuers amid the rubble of the World Trade Center in the hours following the September 11 attack, to live reports from sites perilously close to coalition bombing targets in Afghanistan in recent weeks, mobile satellite communications have dramatically raised the benchmark for live, on-the-scene news coverage.
Leading the newsgathering revolution are lightweight, portable satellite telephones and videophone units that enable reporters to quickly broadcast live audio and video from areas where a full satellite link-up is not possible. These briefcase-sized units weigh as little as 10 pounds, can be set up in seconds and are easily operated by a single reporter. Linked to a camera and a small folding satellite dish, these units are changing the way major networks cover the news, giving them more power to broadcast from the scene, in real time, at virtually a moment's notice.
While awareness and interest in satellite videophones grew among the network news industry following CNN's usage of the technology to cover the U.S./China spy plane crisis earlier this year, demand has radically spiked in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. "We are on an around-the-clock production schedule to try to meet the demand," said Gerry Gutman, President of Richtec, Inc., one U.S.-based provider of mobile satellite communications systems. "Whereas certain network news organizations and government agencies were the primary users of such technology in the past, today every major network is using, or has ordered, mobile satellite videophone products from companies around the world, and more inquiries come in every day from a growing number of other industries."
Announced long before the events of September 11, MSUA-2, a world conference focused entirely on Mobile Satellite Users is scheduled for December 3-4, 2001, in Arlington, Virginia. This second annual international Mobile Satellite Users Conference and Exhibition will be hosted by the Mobile Satellite Users Association (MSUA), less than 90 days after tragic events catapulted mobile satellite systems into the global spotlight. As a result, the conference represents a unique opportunity for all involved with, or interested in, mobile satellite communications.
"With MSUA-2, we're giving current and potential users of the technology a chance to meet with each other, as well as with manufacturers, resellers, service providers and regulators, to discuss what the industry is doing, and needs to do, to continue to meet their growing needs," said MSUA President Ahmad Ghais. "The show will feature live demonstrations of satellite terminals, which will better enable mobile satellite services users to learn about, evaluate and compare the latest equipment, systems and services offered by major providers."
The MSUA-2 conference will be held on December 3-4, 2001, at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, Virginia. MSUA-2 is currently accepting exhibitors for the limited number of exhibit spaces that remain available. If you're interested in attending or exhibiting at MSUA-2, call +1 410 827-9268.
MSUA is a non-profit association dedicated to promoting the interests of the users of mobile satellite services (MSS) worldwide. It serves the interests of MSS users by fostering communications among and between MSS users, suppliers of MSS equipment and services, operators of the MSS satellite systems, and the various entities that may affect the future of the industry. In addition, MSUA reviews, analyzes and reports on, from an MSS user's perspective, the activities, regulatory decisions and critical events of the MSS industry. Finally, MSUA provides a means of assembling MSS users' views on system and service concerns and conveying these concerns to the appropriate authorities.
1. How do I watch separate programming on two televisions
with the DISH Network system?
You'll need a separate receiver for each television
you'd like to connect. The cost of programming for each additional receiver
is $4.99 a month. If you hook up more than two receivers, additional equipment
like a multi-switch will be required. Check with a Skyvision product
representative for more information on additional equipment. You can hook
up as many TVs as you would like to just one receiver, but all TVs will receive
the same program.
2. What can I
do if my remote isn't working?
1) Check to ensure the batteries are inserted correctly.
2) Try new batteries. 3) Your remote control should be in the SAT mode to
operate your satellite receiver. 4) Check to see if you have a clear line
of sight from the remote to the front of the receiver. 5) If you have a UHF
remote (indicated by the letters "UHF" near the bottom of the remote), verify
that the UHF antenna is attached and properly hand-tightened to the port
in the back of the receiver labeled "UHF Antenna." Also make sure the antenna
is not touching other metal equipment. 6) Check the remote address as described
in the back of your User Guide.
<> 3. Why do I
have a picture on my screen but can't get any sound from the
TV?
1) Check to see that you have the TV volume turned
up. 2) Is the mute function on your TV on? If so, turn it off. 3) If your
receiver is connected through a stereo, make sure the stereo is in the correct
mode and the volume is turned up. 4) Make sure all cables and connections
are secure, hand-tightening any loose connections. 5) Try carefully pulling
out the Smart Card and carefully reinserting into the receiver.
<>4. What's wrong? When I turn on my TV, I can't get
a picture.
1) Check to make sure the TV power is turned on.
2) Make sure your receiver is turned on (front-panel power light should be
on.) 3) Is your TV connected to the receiver TV OUT with one cable connection?
If so, try the following: A) Make sure your TV is set to receive programming
on either Channel 3 or 4, corresponding to the channel the receiver is set
to. B) With the remote control in the SAT mode, press TV/Video button on
the remote control to switch from antenna input to satellite viewing. 4)
Is your TV connected to the receiver using three connections (one video and
two audio)? If so, make sure your TV is set up to receive picture on that
input. Consult your TV manual. 5) Verify cables and connections are secure,
hand-tightening any loose connections. 6) Try carefully pulling out the Smart
Card and carefully reinserting into the receiver.
<>5. How can I change between satellite
channels?
1) Press the up or down arrow button on the remote
control to change channel up or down while watching TV. Or press Guide and
select the desired channel from the guide listings. 2) Make sure your remote
is in the SAT mode to operate your satellite receiver. 3) Try changing channels
on the front panel of your receiver. If this works, check remote control
operation, as discussed in an earlier question. 4) Try carefully pulling
out the Smart Card and carefully reinserting into the receiver.
<> 6. Why doesn't my TV or receiver seem to have
power?
1) Check to see if your power cord is plugged in
for both TV and receiver. 2) Try turning on the power of your TV or receiver
by using the front panel or remote control, as applicable. 3) Check to see
if the TV or receiver will work when plugged into another power outlet. 4)
Check to see if the TV or receiver is plugged into an outlet operated by
a wall switch or surge protector. If so, make sure that the wall switch or
surge protector is turned on.
<> 7. What's wrong?
My TV screen says that there is no satellite signal.
1) Make sure the cables and connections are secure,
hand-tightening any loose connections. 2) Are you having bad weather like
heavy rain or snow? Heavy rain may result in a temporary loss of signal and
excessive snow accumulation on the dish antenna may cause signal loss. If
you can remove the snow safely from your dish antenna, you should be able
to reacquire your signal. 3) Are there trees or shrubs growing above the
dish antenna or in the path between the dish antenna and the satellites?
Plant growth can interfere with incoming satellite signals to the dish antenna.
Pruning back these plants may be needed to restore satellite signal. 4) Consult
your User Guide for other potential causes and solutions. 5) If you have
two receivers, verify that the problem is present on both.
Satellite Internet: How It Works
VSAT Systems uses a satellite connection as a high-speed digital link between a customers location and the US Internet backbone. The data travels from the satellite equipment at the customers location to the satellite, and then to the teleport for routing to the Internet.
The teleport is a secure facility where many large aperture satellite dishes are operated. The SES Americom operations center is located at the teleport and our equipment is located in a leased area inside the Network Operations Center (NOC).
At the NOC, routers are connected to the Internet using OC-3 optical connections to a Tier-I Internet backbone provider.
Proprietary acceleration and advanced spoofing technology is employed to provide IP transparency and increase throughput speed. Spoofing is what makes the service capable of very high speeds.
Why is spoofing important? The entire Internet is based on TCP/IP. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) manages and controls transmissions using IP (Internet Protocol). TCP sends data and looks for acknowledgments (receipts) sent back from the receiving end to indicate that everything was received. If the acknowledgments are not received, TCP resends the packets and slows down its transmission speed for future data. TCP expects these acknowledgments to be received within a certain time frame. Because of the long round-trip (90,000+ miles) that the packets must travel over the satellite link and back, the acknowledgments are delayed by several hundred milliseconds. If uncorrected, this delay would cause TCP to throttle back its speed dramatically.
Spoofing is accomplished by special NOC equipment (Hybrid Gateway) that causes TCP acknowledgments to be returned to the sender very quickly. It does this by spoofing (pretending to be the remote site) and acknowledging the packets instantly, at the same time as it forwards the packets to the remote site. TCP sees rapid acknowledgments and therefore ramps up its speed quickly. The Hybrid Gateway also looks for the real acknowledgments and discards them. If an acknowledgment is missed, the Hybrid Gateway resends the packet from its buffer. It is in this manner that multi-megabit speeds are made possible over satellite.
